Why Wix Is Bad For SEO – No UK Ranking, Only Local
First of all, it’s expensive to be cheap. You don’t give an expert job to an apprentice, would you? It’s better to place your trust in someone who has many years’ experience and who has no vested interest in recommending a huge change for no reason.
Launched in 2006, Wix is renowned for being a simple business solution for startups who want to promote their local business such as a Landscape Gardener in Leicester or a Dog Walker in Durham. UK Nationwide ranking was not possible with Wix. A decade ago, their platform was restrictive, poorly constructed and the SEO tools they offer to you will only work in your local village, town and maybe city if you have a central location.
I was once hired for 4 hours to build a 3 pages website using Wix. I did this because it’s much easier for the client to edit things themself than it is with WordPress. It was simply an information website with a contact form, no SEO was required but I did have time to install Google Analytics (before GA4) and connect to Search Console..
WIX to WordPress – What New Features and What’s Best For My Small Business
Now let’s talk about Wix and its reputation for SEO. And I gotta say, it’s definitely come a long way since its early days. Back in the day, Wix didn’t have many of the basic SEO features we take for granted now, like alt text and custom URL structures. But these days, you can do just about everything you need on-page SEO-wise using Wix. They’ve even hired some expert SEOs who have pushed for more features and better communication. Swoon.
In a study that was done a few years back, they compared Wix SEO to WordPress SEO and looked at over 6.4 million websites. They found that, on average, more WordPress websites got organic traffic than Wix websites. But Wix is still a solid choice for small personal websites or local services that are geographically targeted. It’s even got some of the more complex e-commerce SEO stuff covered. But if you’re in the finance or digital services space, you might want to consider a different platform since Wix’s capabilities in those areas are largely untested.
Now, I know you asked for a casual and chatty re-write, but I gotta be honest, I wouldn’t recommend Wix for myself or my customers. WordPress and Shopify have way more features and customization options, even though they might take longer to learn. And once you pick a content management system, be ready to stick with it for the long haul because switching can be a real pain.
Wix was launched in 2006, here are some major updates and improvements Wix has made to its platform over the years:
- After ten years in 2016, Wix launched its first big update, which added many basic SEO functionalities like adding alt text and the ability to change URL structures.
- 2018, Wix introduced Wix ADI, an artificial intelligence design assistant that creates custom websites for non technical users.
- In 2019, Wix launched Wix Code, a platform for creating custom web apps for developers and users who code.
Just a few years ago in 2020, Wix introduced Wix Ascend, an all-in-one platform for managing and growing businesses online, handling everything from marketing and sales to customer service and operations. The highlights include Marketing Automation so you can automate your marketing tasks and reach your customers at the right time with the right message, it’s a little like forward planning with a time and a date on your calendar, ideal for events and flash sales, like Black Friday.
CRM – This acronym stands for Customer Relationship Management, a strategy that businesses use to manage their interactions with customers and clients. A CRM system helps businesses to organise and track their customer interactions, sales, and support tickets, among other cool stuff. Their intuitive tool organises customer data; including contact information, purchase history (including dates), and communication history. This makes it easy to keep track of your customer interactions and access important information when you work as part of a team and notes have been left by other colleagues to track and respond to customer support requests, and even set up automated responses to common questions.

In 2021, Wix introduced a new version of its website editor with improved drag-and-drop functionality and design capabilities.

I contacted Nina in May 2020 as I’d just completed a 12 month contract with a Wix SEO specialist which proved little to no improvement in Google rankings nor business enquiries.

You may need 3 people for this task, at least two which will be a WordPress Developer and your SEO Freelancer.
The third may not be needed but a brand/creative designer is a bonus to resize your images to fit the new platform. It’s not as simple as buying a new pair of wellies that’s for sure!
- The web developer will need your hosting login details to download all of your content and images.
- Once imported, the developer will then build your new website on WordPress on a staging platform that’s hidden from the public domain as the design features are built. This will be a 4-6 week process.
- You may require additional creatives such as your logo resized, or a new promotional banner for the homepage slider to be designed. Brand designers can offer small business packages from around £150.
- Once the website is live then that’s when the SEO jumps in to start Digital Marketing.

It’s a common assumption that a website developer will know Search Engine Optimisation, this is not the case 95% of the time. It’s rare to find a developer unicorn that knows great SEO methods.
These are rare and I have met a couple and we may not be the most fun at parties, but we love nothing more than a good natter about the latest Google algorithm and the quirks some of our clients have.
I will not take your money for SEO if you use any free website builder, whether it be Weebly, WIX, or any cheap host builder such as Go Daddy or Ionos. As I said, it’s expensive to be cheap.
